PUNE: A day after top teams lost points, I-League champions Salgaocar SC too suffered a jolt after they were held to a goalless draw by Mumbai FC in a group B match in 33rd Federation Cup here at the Balewadi Sports Complex on Sunday.
But newcomers Indian Arrows emerged as the unheralded heroes when they beat HAL 1-0 at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex here. Jibon Singh converted a spotkick in the 89th minute to help Arrows win their opening game.
Sukhwinder Singh's sideplayed with a purpose with skipper Shilton D'Silva combining well with formerViva Kerala striker CS Sabeeth. But Arrows had to wait till the end when thefound the target after T Lalnunpuia was brought down inside the box by a HALdefender.
With Ryuji Seoka partnering Chidi Edeh upfront, RocusLamare and Mehrajuddin Wadoo did all the hard-work for Salgaocar in themidfield. Mehraj played all over while Lamare caught the eye as he fed IshfaqAhmed and Chidi on a number of occasions.
United beat Viva Kerala:In a group D match in Kolkata, Prayag United overcame Viva Kerala 1-0. JosimarDasilva Martins scored in the 17th minute when he tapped in a rebound. The matchstarted amid loud cheers from the fans of the local team who dominated theproceedings right from kick-off. The Prayag midfielders co-ordinated wellbetween themselves and fed the strikers upfront almost everytime they had thepossession. In another match, Sporting Clube de Goa stuggled to beat Air India2-1.
